On the southern shores of Manila Bay thrives a province that played a major part in Filipino history, Cavite. It is located in Luzon's CALABARZON region, about 15 kilometers south of Manila. It is surrounded by Laguna, Metro Manila, and Batangas. The west part of the province connects to the West Philippine Sea.
Cavite's name was derived from the Hispanic form of
kalawit or
kawit, the tagalog terminology for "hook", in reference to the small hook-shaped peninsula that stretches across the Manila bay. The name was originally applied only to the peninsula (Cavite La Punta, now Cavite City) and the adjacent lowland coastal area (Cavite Viejo, now Kawit). Cavite city used to be the province's capital city until 1954, which was then replaced by Trece Martires city.
